11 Plus Revision Plan Using books

Of course if parents wish to use books to build up individual skill areas then they remain a valid option and our suggestions of which one to use are included below. This includes both numeracy and literacy work.

Numeracy Core Skills Work

On the numeracy side as part of an eleven plus revision plan we’d suggest, in terms of core skills work (regardless of which exam you are doing – GL, CEM school written), that you focus on the following:

  • Every day doing some Mental Maths work to keep the core of your knowledge ticking over. You should be focussing on getting 100% on these questions.
  • Use the work not only to help keep skills fresh but also to aid accuracy development. During the summer holidays, we’d suggest 1 page per day. Whilst during term time it may be better, due to time constraints, to do one exercise per day.
  • We’d also suggest doing some worded problems to keep these fresh. Children could do 1 page per day during holiday time, perhaps less if school has started.

It’s essential that core skills remain exercised and that the focus on accuracy is maintained. We wouldn’t suggest that moving onto Schofield and Sims book 5 or 6 is beneficial at this point, all we want to achieve is to exercise a child’s skills, they will get all the stretch they need through the papers themselves.

Literacy Core Skills Work

On the literacy side as a core part of an eleven plus revision plan we’d suggest the following:

  • Children need to maintain a focus on spelling during this period. Do one page per day during holiday time, perhaps a little less during the school week if you are revising then.
  • Children need to be reading every day. They should be reading for at least half an hour per day or more. Do not let this slip, it remains really important.
  • Many 11 Plus Exams will contain complicated texts. We suggest children should get familiar with classic books texts during their preparation process. During revision this is also important. Do some paired reading each week using classic book texts from our classic book list.

All of the above applies to children regardless of whether they are doing GL, CEM or school written exams.

11 Plus results day

11 plus results 2022

Although it is only a month or so, the wait between taking the 11-plus and receiving results can feel very long. Results day can be extremely stressful – for both parents and children. If you’ve had good news, congratulations! You should be very proud. However, remember to be considerate of parents and children who may have had disappointing results. Remind your child not to boast about their score at school.

What to do if your child does not pass the 11+?

Try to hide your disappointment if your own child did not pass the 11- plus. Unfortunately, it is not possible to appeal your child’s score or to re-sit the 11-plus. Instead, focus on the positives of the school your child will be attending. Reassure your son or daughter that you love them and are proud of them. Praise their other achievements and try to move on quickly.

Standardised scores are much more useful measures than raw scores. These scores compare test-takers to large, nationally representative sample that has taken the test prior to publication. Therefore they give you a comparative look at your child’s results.

When to start 11 plus tuition?

Most parents start 11+ tuition from Year 4 or Year 5. Initially, a specialist 11+ tutor will assess the child’s current levels before then going on to ensure a rich and rigorous foundation across all core skills. Then go on to prepare pupils for the actual 11+ exam demands. As well as building confidence and exam technique.

In what year is the 11plus?

Grammar schools select their pupils into Year 7 by means of an academic examination called the 11+ or “11 plus”. A small number of grammar schools also have an intake into Year 8 or Year 9 and test pupils with an equivalent 12+ or 13+ Exam.

Why grammar school?

Grammar schools are selective state-funded secondary schools that have a strong focus on academic achievement. Grammar schools  do not charge fees, and competition for places is generally very high.

164 grammar schools are located in 36 English local authorities. There are a further 69 grammar schools in Northern Ireland, but none in Wales or Scotland. It is not always necessary for you to live in an area with state grammar schools for your child to gain a place at one. A few grammar schools recruit from outside their catchment while others offer boarding facilities. Most grammar schools, however, give preference to those living within their catchment.

UK Grammar School Education Requirements

If you are looking to get your child into a UK-based grammar school, then there are a few things that you will need to know. Any grammar school in Europe is like a secondary education in the UK and that is focused on admitting individuals on the basis of merit. There will be an entrance exam that will be conducted in the 6th year of their education and individuals with the highest scores will be eligible to join the school. There are three different types of schools out there such as secondary schools, technical schools and finally, and grammar schools. The primary education that is focused on in these schools is grammar and there is nothing demanding in joining such schools.

Are Grammar Schools Free?

One of the best features of grammar schools is that they are free. In a private school, students will have to pay a certain amount of session and tuition fees for getting a basic education. A child will not need to pay any fees if they are attending a grammar school as these schools are funded by the government and if a child is attending such a school, then they will need to be good at English and grammar. Students are only admitted on the basis of their merit and nothing else. There are a few grammar schools out there that also come with boarding facilities that will also require parents to pay if their child is using the boarding provisions provided by the state. It is also important to understand the price for these provisions is extremely low and the fees are being charged by independent boarding schools and there is no amount that is going to the government in such cases.

What kind of entrance test is required to get into a Grammar School?

Grammar schools are quite academically precise regarding the students they are admitting and the selection criteria are based on performance on the entrance examination and nothing else. These exams are conducted in the 6th year of primary school which is the final year. On the basis of these exams, the students will get admission to grammar schools. The 11+ will assess the children to a certain extent as well and there are some common subjects that will come into account which are English, Mathematics, and non-verbal and verbal reasoning. The tool used for conducting such examinations is the GL assessment method, which is a common entrance examination method in the UK.

What are the benefits of Grammar Schools?

Since grammar schools only select the best out of the group, it is quite evident that these folks will be achieving more than the rest at GCSE and A-level examinations. The folks at grammar schools will be performing at their best since they are coming with an achievers’ mindset and their constant focus will be to perform at their best. Research proves that more than 25% of the first list of top academic students in the UK prefer visiting grammar schools compared to other ones. The problem with non-selective schools is that there are more mixed-ability classes which will evidently slow down the pace of the teaching for these students.

What are the Disadvantages of Grammar Schools?

With advantages, disadvantages also come and one of the common mishaps that take place in such schools is the unnecessary stress at the primary school level. While a student is studying for their primary school final, they will also have to focus on their admission test studies for a grammar school, which will also be conducted in the same year. The children will be working on their cognitive skills that will be between the age of 10 and 11 and in the cases of late developers, children that are born towards the end of the school year will face a major disadvantage.

What is the 2024 Application Process for Grammar Schools?

The application procedure for grammar schools is not actually that complicated. The key admission dates will be different from one school to another and it is very important for checking the target schools first-hand before the child begins their application process, the dates will have to be tracked. Most of the grammar schools will have the same schedule more or less.

Registering for 2024’s 11 plus

The first step is registering for the 11+ examination and one will have to get the details from an overall list or the website of a target school. There are many local authorities as well that will arrange the information for the students and also give out the details regarding where the school or schools are located. The process is basically an open registration process and it will begin for a child when he or she is just in year 5 of primary school. The deadline usually ends in June of the year 5, however, a grace period is provided which extends the deadline till September.

Taking the 11+ examination in 2024

After registration and preparing for the examination, a test takes place in September of the 6th Year of primary school. The results are out in October only and the examinations take place usually on a weekend so that the student gets time to attend their normal school classes.

Applying to your sleected grammar school

Selecting the targeted school beforehand is quite important. One will need to list the preferred school on the secondary school application from CAF and it is usually issued by the local authorities. One should be listing down their preferred grammar schools only and not put the names of all the schools. The former will result in voiding the application.

Allocation of 2024 Grammar School Places

Parents can find which place is allocated to their child on a given specific date such as 1st March 2024. Based on fulfilling the entry criteria, the child will have a better opportunity to get allocation in their highest-preferred school. Also, if the target school of the child is oversubscribed and failing to meet the oversubscription criteria then they will be given a place at another school in their area.
