What are the CAT4 test question types?
There are many types of question in GL Assessment’s excellent replacement CAT4 tests range to the SAT’s benchmarking system.
What is GL Assessment’s CAT4 test suite
- The cognitive abilities test or CAT4 is one of the most recognized methods for testing a student’s academic potential and challenges.
- It is basically divided into different categories including quantitative, spatial abilities, non-verbal and verbal.
- CAT4 reports are for both teachers and parents as well and for receiving individual reports, teachers will be able to access group reports as well.

How can schools apply your child’s CAT4 results?
Which skills does the CAT4 assess?
The four key aptitude test areas are:
The CAT4 are skills tests, so which are the skills assessed by these eight CAT subtests?
non-verbal reasoning skills ; quantitative reasoning skills ; spatial reasoning skills and verbal reasoning skills.
Additional challenging: non-verbal reasoning skills ; quantitative reasoning skills ; spatial reasoning skills and verbal reasoning skills.
What are these eight CAT4 subtests called ?
Each is assessed by two CAT4 sections, as detailed below:
- Verbal Reasoning Skills by the CAT4 Verbal Analogies and by the CAT4 Verbal Classification .
- Non-Verbal Reasoning Skills by the CAT4 Figure Recognition and by the CAT4 Figure Analysis.
- Quantitative Reasoning Skills by the CAT4 Number Analogies and by the Number Series CAT4 test sample
- Spatial Reasoning Skills by the CAT4 Figure Classification and by the CAT4 Figure Matrices.
How does GL Assessment introduce its CAT4 standardised test?
CAT4 test question types
The CAT4 consists of 8 individual tests to evaluate a student’s Verbal Reasoning (VR), Non Verbal Reasoning (NVR), Quantitative Reasoning (QR) and Spatial Awareness (SA).
Individual tests are between 8-10 minutes and consist of the following;
- Figure Classification and Figure Matrices
- Verbal Classification and Verbal Analogies
- Number Analogies and Number Series
- Figure Analysis and Figure Recognition
What’s the CAT4 pass mark?
That depends. Although there isn’t a CAT4 pass mark as such.
How can parents support their child’s CAT4 preparation?
Parents can support their child in the following ways:
- By organizing various teaching methods that suit their child’s learning process best.
- Providing a suitable, quiet working environment.
- Provide new books and magazines which will encourage the learning of new words. Plus word meaning and different uses.
- Arrange scientific experiments that can help to boost their child’s enthusiasm for learning CAT4-related concepts.
How do schools use CAT4 test results?
- Primarily to determine the reasoning qualities of a child and compares his or her progress to the children of the same age and groups.
- Aligned with the above as a means of tracking in detail an individual student’s learning progress.
- But also to show teachers how best to teach individual students.
How does GL Assessment recommend using CAT4 results?
What are the types of Verbal Reasoning question in the CAT4?
Two types of verbal reasoning question: Verbal classifications and Verbal analogies.
In summary, the CAT4 verbal reasoning questions:
- Contain three words that have the same meaning.
- Require identifyinh the concept linking these three words…
- Then selecting one word that best fits them all (from the list of five words provided).
- Assess word knowledge, verbal reasoning, and language development.
CAT4 Verbal Reasoning Skills
- Verbal reasoning is the ability to understand, classify, and identify patterns in words.
- The CAT4 measures a child’s ability in this area using a verbal classification test and a verbal analogies test.
- CAT4’s verbal classification test presents the student with a number of words which are related in some way.
- The student then needs to select another word from five other words which is associated in a similar way with the group presented.
Verbal Classification Example from GL Assessment
- The verbal analogies test requires the student to determine the relationship between a pair of words.
- A third word will then be presented and the student needs to use the relationship from the first pair to select a fourth word.
- This helps to assess the ability to determine verbal connections, relationships, and patterns.

What are the types of Quantitative Reasoning question in the CAT4?
CAT4 Quantitative Reasoning (aka Maths questions)
The CAT4 Quantitative Reasoning questions are number analogy and number series type MAths questions. In summary:
- Ability to apply mathematical skills to real world problems.
- Requires the identification of similarities and patterns in numbers to help analyse.
- Assesses conclusions which are based on logical relationships.
- Measures a child’s ability in this area using a number analogies test and a number series test.
Number Analogy Example from GL Assessment
The number series test presents a series of numbers which are related using a rule or function. The student needs to analyze the numbers and determine the function / rule and calculate the next number in the sequence.

What are the types of Non-Verbal Reasoning question in the CAT4?
CAT4 Non Verbal Reasoning
The CAT4 Non-verbal Reasoning question type involve shapes and patterns. These appear in the form of figures & matrices.
- Non-verbal reasoning is the ability to visually understand shapes, their relationships and patterns, differences, and similarities.
- CAT4 measures a child’s ability in this area using a figure classification test and a figure matrices test.
- The figure classification test presents a group of shapes which are similar in some way.
- Respondents select one of the other five shapes presented that also belong to the group due to the shared characteristic.
Figure Classification Example from GL Assessment
The figure matrices test is about recognizing the way shapes change and how to apply this change to other shapes.

What are the types of Spatial Reasoning question in the CAT4?
CAT4 Spatial Reasoning
The CAT4 Spatial Reasoning question types involve mentally generating and transforming visual images. These appear in the form of figures.
- Spatial Reasoning is the ability to solve complex three dimensional problems by mentally visualizing, manipulating, rotating, and transforming images.
- The CAT4 measures a child’s ability in this area using a figure analysis test and a figure recognition test.
- The student needs to visualize how the square would look unfolded and select the correct option from the five presented.
What type of questions are in a CAT4 test?
- The figure recognition test evaluates the students ability to recognize shapes within other shapes.

What are the CAT4 spatial reasoning test questions like?
In the CAT4 spatial reasoning questions you have to manipulate 2D and 3D shapes. So similar to the non-verbal reasoning questions in that sense.
You need to identify each of the different set of shapes’ patterns. In other words the relationships between them. How they relate to each other.
2D shape combinations
INSTRUCTIONS – Find which shapes can be combined to create the full picture you’ve been presented with in each CAT4 spatial reasoning question.
Take a look at this example question. Which of the options below, makes up the top shape?
Matching 2D Shapes
INSTRUCTIONS – Find which two shapes are identical in each CAT4 spatial reasoning question.
Regardless of the perspective / angle shown, identify which two 2D shapes are equivalent.

Analyse the Mirror Image
INSTRUCTIONS – Find the exact mirror image for each CAT4 spatial reasoning question.
Analysing 3D Cube construction
INSTRUCTIONS – Find for each CAT4 spatial reasoning question:
- The marking which is the exact opposite of the one that is presented in the question.
- or if it’s a flattened out 3D cube, then you must choose which of the answer options represents the fully reconstructed cube. So, when in three dimensions in other words.

Solid 2D and 3D shapes
INSTRUCTIONS – Find for each CAT4 spatial reasoning question, you must determine which 3D shape is equivalent to the unmade one presented. So, in other words, which of the folded up shapes is represented by the unfolded shape in the questions.
