Introducing parents to the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP)
Our summary of the MAP’s key features for parents
- kind of entrance test that involves testing the reading ability, science, and math skills of a student.
- usually available in computerized form.
- customized to the student’s current level of knowledge and education.
- provides pupils with a fair chance to prove their knowledge.
- shows that the school year or class has achieved a minimum academic standard.
- DOES NOT ASSESS the cognitive ability of a student to learn.
Children’s Progress Academic Assessment (CPAA)
Is a standardized test that lets teachers evaluate your child and provides a very thorough analysis of where your child performed well and where there is room for improvement.
It is a good idea to thoroughly review the works from previous years since subject knowledge is critical in passing these tests.
Welcome to our MAP Test Practice Guide for Parents.
MAP Test Practice Guide for Parents
It’s highly recommended to use MAP test practice. Many topics on the test can be mastered simply through the right revision material. Proper preparation, therefore, provides a more accurate image of your second grader’s abilities. In addition, many academic establishments use MAP scores as admission material. Your child’s MAP score can mean entry into competitive gifted programs.
The 2nd Grade MAP Test is a computerized test that measures the student’s abilities in math, language usage, reading comprehension, and for some grades, science. The MAP is adaptive, which means that:
- If one question is answered correctly the next question becomes harder.
- Whereas, answering incorrectly, makes the next question easier.
MAP test usage with gifted children
MAP is an abbreviation form of Measure of Academic Progress which is a type of computer adaptive test. In the US, around 3 million students take part in this examination throughout their academic years. It simply helps the teachers, parents, and all other administrators to bring improvement in learning for all the students.
NWEA MAP helps students to identify their grey areas. It was first introduced for the students studying in grades three to five in the year 2005 -2006. Later, it also facilitated for the students of grades one and two.

Why use MAP practice tests?
On gifted children programs, it is more likely that gifted children will
- Find peers who have similar pursuits;
- Fit in better than in general classrooms.
- Feel better and they comfortable about socialising and thereby making new friends.
- Have become very popular across America.
How teachers use NWEA’s MAP
- The MAP test is considered an important tool in a teacher’s toolkit. Since children learn at their own pace, the MAP test supports each child as an individual leaner.
- Still, the role of teachers is equally important to ensure that students score well in the MAP test.
- For example, thorough checking is vital to identify the wrongs and the ways how they would be corrected. Here, teachers can play a prominent role.
- They continuously support children in their progression.
- What is the MAP foundation test?
- Suitable for most new applicants for this examination series.
- The lowest ZPD level is implemented here and will not be applicable for students who are already at ZPD level 2.
- The students who are appearing for pre-kindergarten classes or at the beginning stage of kindergarten will find this test suitable for themselves.
- Once passed, the students will be moving to the standard foundation skill tests.
Re-taking the MAP foundation test
- If the student fails to answer at least 15 questions correctly, then he or she will have to take the basic foundation level test.
- This ensures that the student has not gotten at least 75% accuracy in the test, which is the minimum requirement.
- The 2-minute sentence reading fluency test is the main deciding factor for the adaptive oral reading test.
- There is one more determining factor, to pass the test effectively, the student will have to attempt more questions.
- If a student attempts 14 questions and gets all of them correct, then they will not qualify.
- On the other hand, if a student attempts 20 questions and gets 16 questions correct, then they will qualify. All these conditions will be applicable for grade 3 or 3+ students.
Is the MAP test different for Grade 4+ students?
- In this case, if a student is not able to answer, a downward approach towards the foundation skills test will not be followed.
- However, they will not be appearing for adaptive oral reading, and the foundation skills test will replace the oral reading test.
- MAP Adaptive oral reading including passage reading only
- This process is more or less similar to adaptive oral reading for specific grades.
- Marking and pass or fail criterion stays the same as well. The assessment is ideal for students who consider themselves confident readers.
Supporting your child’s MAP test practice
Parents can support their child:
- By following those teaching methods that best suit their child’s learning style(s).
- With a quiet working environment for MAP practice.
- With MAP practice books. Plus suitably challenging reading material to encourage their child to learn new words.
What is the MAP Adaptive oral reading test ?
- The students are provided with a 50-word picture book and they are asked to speak about the pictures out loud.
- Students will be assessed based on a time sentenced picture, where their basic comprehension skills will be checked.
- If a student manages to pass this level, then oral reading will be waiting for them, where they will have to read 3 passages, with 6 comprehension questions in each of them.
- On the other hand, if a student does not pass the picture-based test, then they will have to start from the foundation level basic test.

Purposes of the MAP test
The main purposes of taking this MAP test are for:
- Assisting teachers
- Helping parents to identify the strengths and weaknesses
- Indicating those areas where a student performed well
- Highlighting areas where a student needs more support.
- Tracking the acknowledgment a student got in his or her school.
- Providing a growth chart for every student to measure their academic progress. This type of system of measurement is called the RIT scale or Rasch Unit. The use of this scale is to monitor the academic growth of every student. The range of this scale starts from 140 to 190 level in third grade and increases to the range of 240 to 300 by high school.
How is the MAP Test used?
- When the students join the schools, the first two weeks of their school is dedicated to the MAP testing sessions.
- All the students can participate in this session. Here, mainly teachers concentrate on the ability of the students to assess reading and solving Mathematics.
- The difficulty level of the questions of this test is based on the student’s capacity to solve.
- When a student can answer a question correctly then the difficulty level of the next question is increased.
- However, when a student cannot answer a question correctly, then the questions become easier.
- The MAP test admin time is not fixed. However, it generally takes one to two hours for a student to complete the test.
- Students generally can repeat their tests during the whole year to continuously evaluate their progress and adopt new required learning skills.
- Though most of the schools arranged this test at the beginning, middle and end of the school years.

How parents can offer additional support for their child’s MAP test practice
Parents can support their child
- By organizing various teaching methods that suit their child’s learning process best.
- Consulting with their children’s teachers to know about MAP test-related progress.
- Provide a suitable, quiet working environment.
- Provide new books and magazines which will encourage the learning of new words. Plus word meaning and different uses.
- Arrange scientific experiments that can help to boost their child’s enthusiasm over learning.
- Provide a learning-focused home environment in which children taking the MAP test do not need to worry about how they are progressing.
Using MAP with your gifted child
- First thing is to become familiar with the various multiple subtests and question types of the MAP assessment.
- How best to do that? Well, initially you can simply work alongside them to solve individual questions together.
- Rather than putting another school book in front of your child, try practicing MAP sample questions on mobile or tab.
- Then as your next step, try to replicate as closely as possible an actual MAP exam environment.
- MAP mock testing is then an ideal way to establish whether or not your child is now likely to pass MAP.
Leverage sample MAP questions
- MAP sample questions are very helpful to see where – then how – your child is going wrong.
- Monitor and track your child’s MAP scores. Analyse their answers on the question types they always seem to get wrong.
- That way you can then get them to focus only on the CAT4 question types which represent their weaker topics.
- Mastering their MAP challenges using a structured approach will help to build a growth mindset in your child.
MAP Test Practice
We believe there are three processes for MAP test practice: prepare, practice and check:
- Prepare denotes the continuous assessment of any topic that they learned earlier. It helps them to grow a better understanding of what they read. To develop the ability of grammar and vocabulary they can use a variety of reading materials.
- Also, through writing practice, they can develop the skills of appropriate using of the sentences and grammar. Several online platforms avail different practice sets for preparing MAP. Parents should give their children access to those practice sets for continuous practice which helps them to improve their confidence. Also, through these tests, they can familiarise themselves with the patterns of questions and their nature. However, not only preparing and practicing is enough.
- Thorough checking is vital to identify the wrongs and the ways how they would be corrected. In this case, teachers can play a prominent role. They continuously support children in their progression. The MAP test is considered an important tool in a teacher's toolkit. Children often learn at different paces to their associates. The MAP test supports each child to be academically vindicated or supported in the path that can best suit them. However, the role of teachers is equally important to ensure that students score well in the MAP test.
What is the MAP Growth skills test?
MAP growth skills test is one of the most competitive self-examination portals for enhancing the reading and fluency skills of students. The tests can be selected as per the preference provided by the schools where the students are studying in.
For example, certain institutions prefer MAP Growth over MAP Reading fluency or vice versa. Effective reading fluency will allow a student to be more confident and open in the modern world, where a competitive edge is a defining factor for all students.
What is MAP reading fluency?
MAP reading fluency is an online assessment for those students who have grade equivalent or more than PK-5 and those who are still learning to read. This kind of test determines the reading skills and lays utmost emphasis on oral fluency. Students up to grade 8 can take the oral reading fluency test.

- Test is done using a laptop or tablet.
- NWEA MAP students read aloud by looking at the comprehension displayed on the screen.
- Literacy skills include letter knowledge, awareness of phonemics, picturized vocabulary, etc.
Types of reading fluency tests:
There are four types of fluency test and they are;
- Foundation skill test
- Foundation skill test for beginners
- Grade-specific adaptive oral orientation test
- Adaptive oral reading (passages
Each test is approximately 20 minutes long. The experienced test subjects usually complete it before time. There is no time extension provided in any kind of scenario.
