For decades, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside students on their educational journeys. My teaching career began in 1977 within secondary schools, where I focused on English as an Additional Language (EAL). This foundational experience not only honed my teaching skills but also ignited a passion for supporting diverse learners. I quickly rose to become a Head of Department, taking on greater responsibility in shaping language education for countless students.
Progress Tuition Centre
The year 2000 marked a significant shift in my career. I founded the Progress Tuition Centre, a venture dedicated to providing face-to-face tuition and helping pupils excel in crucial entrance examinations. The 11+ exam, a gateway to both free schools and prestigious independent institutionslike King’s and many others, became a primary focus. There’s immense satisfaction in seeing a child grasp complex concepts and confidently approach their exams, knowing they’ve been given the tools to succeed. The centre thrived, and I had the honour of guiding many young minds through this pivotal stage of their academic lives.
Online teaching
Then came 2020, a year of unprecedented change that also presented a new opportunity: online teaching. This transition allowed me to expand my reach far beyond the local community. Suddenly, I was able to connect with and teach children in places like Qatar and Abu Dhabi, helping them prepare for entry into UK schools. This global reach has been incredibly rewarding, demonstrating that geographical boundaries are no longer a barrier to quality education. It’s truly inspiring to work with such a diverse group of students, each with their unique aspirations and learning styles.
The Joy of Witnessing Success
Teaching, for me, is more than just a profession; it’s a profound joy. There’s an unparalleled excitement in watching children succeed and blossom. To be a part of their learning journey, witnessing their understanding deepen and their confidence grow, is both exciting and humbling. Every “aha!” moment, every improved test score, and every acceptance letter brings a renewed sense of purpose to my work.
Over the years, I’ve developed a deep understanding of the intricacies of school entrance exams. My approach combines rigorous academic preparation with a focus on building confidence and critical thinking skills. I believe in nurturing a love for learning, empowering students not just to pass an exam, but to embrace the challenges and rewards of intellectual growth. It’s about laying a strong foundation for their future academic endeavours.

My journey from a secondary school EAL teacher to the founder of a successful tuition centre and now an online educator has been incredibly fulfilling. Each step has reinforced my belief in the transformative power of education and the immense potential within every child.
