11 Plus revision process as stress free
11 PLUS REVISION
Whether you are embarking on a real 11 plus revision process at the end of a proper period of preparation or consider last minute preparation to be revision the following points still apply:
Make your 11 Plus revision process as stress free as possible.
Undue pressure and stress leads to under-performance. Educational research has shown that children who feel under pressure and stress begin to see their ability to recall vocabulary and accurately and quickly deliver mental maths calculations degrade. In most cases you will see some reduction in performance due to the stresses of the day. Where pressure and stress is not managed through the 11 Plus revision process pupils experience a 30% reduction in their ability to recall vocabulary and a 10%-15% reduction in their ability to deliver mental maths. In the worst cases (which we see every year without fail) children may freeze on the day.
Eleven Plus Revision
This is true revision for those who have been through a full preparation exercise and just want to know how to structure the revision process and what do when and what materials to use.
Last Minute Eleven Plus Preparation
Often we get contact from parents who are nearing the end of the time they have available who have done little or no work and they want to know what work they can do. Many parents class this as 11 plus revision but in fact the process is very different from real 11 plus revision which takes place at the end of a full preparation process.
11 PLUS EXAM REVISION PAPERS
Exam papers are essential for an effective eleven plus revision process but they need to be used in the right way. It is not the case that children who have done full preparation will improve by doing paper after paper. In fact, for many children just doing lots of papers will be counter-productive.
Papers should be used to keep children up to speed, papers should be used to aid accurate working, papers should be used to gap fill knowledge.
Once you have reviewed the revision papers you can see our suggested detailed six week 11 plus revision plan. This can be expanded if you have more time.
Structured Courses or Papers
Some children will have done a very full preparation and so all they will really need are some papers to keep things going. We list suggested revision papers below for both GL and then CEM. If however, you want to mix a good dose of papers with some wider revision to improve skills, then structured courses are an excellent way to do this. We recommend those provided by Learning Street:
If you decide to use these take care as they are intensive and there is a great deal of content there, in some cases you may be better off allowing six weeks to complete them rather than the stated four weeks they suggest.
Recommended Revision Papers:
For children doing school written exams or exams from a governing body (e.g. CSSE or Kent)
In some cases independent schools or some grammar school governing bodies (e.g. CSSE) will produce sample papers, but it would be rare to find enough or papers covering every topic for the purposes of revision. We’d suggest that you these in addition or to replace one or more of the papers you do as part of the revision process. Don’t get too caught up with the differences in styles.
Revision Papers to use for children doing GL or school written exams or exams issued by a governing body
Maths 11 Plus Revision Papers
Choose one only as you’ll only need four revision papers over four weeks and each pack holds four papers.
Non-Verbal Reasoning 11 Plus Revision Papers
Choose one only as you’ll only need four revision papers over four weeks and each pack holds four papers
In addition for Non-Verbal Reasoning to ensure skills stay as sharp as possible we’d recommend doing some work every day. The best book to use we feel is the following:
English 11 Plus Revision Papers
Choose only one as you’ll only need four revision papers over four weeks and each pack holds four papers.
Remember to read every day and to do the additional spelling work we have suggested and to do some paired reading of classic book texts.
Verbal Reasoning 11 Plus Revision Papers
Choose one pack only as you’ll only need four revision papers over four weeks and each pack contains four papers.
In addition for the Verbal Reasoning exam we’d suggest that children do a little work each day. The best book to use for this is:
For CEM 11 plus revision the papers you should be using are as above BUT with the following amendments.
Instead of using the CGP Verbal Reasoning 10 minute tests book (above) you should use the CEM version of it:
CEM exams feature very similar Non-Verbal Reasoning and Maths (numerical reasoning) content to other exams. The tests will combine the disciplines into two papers (with a mix of subjects). It will be useful for children to get familiar with this. You can either choose to do the work above (all needed ) and then in addition some CEM style test papers or just switch to doing CEM style test papers. Ideally, we’d suggest in each week doing what we suggest AND one CEM test paper then you’ll have the best of both worlds.
